Cathleen M. Mahoney has been named Vice President and General Counsel of the National Abortion Federation (NAF). In her new position, Mahoney will work closely with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, and staff to provide legal advice for NAF operations, programs, and services, and those of NAF's affiliated organizations. Additionally, Mahoney will oversee NAF's public policy and security work.
"I am delighted that Cathleen, with her depth of experience, will be leading NAF's legal, public policy, and security efforts," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of NAF. "She is immensely qualified and deeply dedicated to our mission of ensuring safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women."
Previously, Mahoney was Legal Director for NARAL Pro-Choice America. Prior to that, Mahoney served for 16 years in the U.S. Department of Justice, where she handled a variety of criminal matters, including civil rights and antitrust prosecutions. From 1999-2006, she served as the Director of the Department's Task Force on Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers, which focused on the investigation and prosecution of acts of clinic violence, including violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, and from 2000-2006 she also served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division.

"NAF has been at the forefront of protecting reproductive rights for more than 30 years and I look forward to assisting NAF in ensuring that abortion care remains safe, legal, and accessible."
Mahoney earned a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. in English and French from Stanford University, where she graduated with distinction and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
