Fowler: Dr. Busheikin has made significant contributions to ensuring access to quality abortion services for women in southern Alberta.
Victoria, BC/Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation (NAF) presented the 2007 Christopher Tietze Humanitarian Award to Dr. Ted Busheikin during NAF's Annual Meeting. The Tietze Award is NAF's highest distinction and honours significant, lifetime contributions in the field of abortion care or policy.
"As the first doctor to provide abortion care in the region, Dr. Busheikin has made significant contributions to ensuring access to quality abortion services for women in southern Alberta," said Dawn Fowler, Canadian Director of the National Abortion Federation, when presenting the award to Dr. Busheikin. "He is a physician who has the greatest warmth and compassion for his patients."
In 1969, when abortion was decriminalized in Canada, he immediately made abortion part of his practice. Following the 1988 landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision that gave women the right to obtain abortion care, Dr. Busheikin began making plans to open a private abortion clinic in Calgary.
Dr. Busheikin has remained committed to increasing women's access to abortion care, often in the face of threats to his and his family's personal safety. His office and home have been targeted by anti-abortion protesters.
"He refused to be bullied by the protesters, and became even more determined to improve local services so that women wouldn't have to travel to the U.S. to get the care they needed," said Fowler. "In fact, as the violence and protests increased he became even more resolved to continue services."
Dr. Busheikin successfully petitioned the courts, at his own expense, for protection so that women could have peaceful entry to his clinic.
Dr. Busheikin continues to be a leader in the reproductive rights movement. Over the past 15 years, he has trained students and residents in abortion procedures to ensure women continue to have access to safe quality abortion care.
