"Many women have reported that their confidentiality has been violated and that mistreatment by CPCs has threatened their health," says Vicki Saporta, NAF President and CEO. Yet each year they receive millions of dollars in federal and state aid."
Washington, DC-The National Abortion Federation released a comprehensive report today detailing the many ways Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) have deceived and intimidated women. The report, entitled Crisis Pregnancy Centers: An Affront to Choice, highlights numerous instances where CPCs have harassed and given false information to women who have come through their doors, leaving them feeling betrayed and misled. The report also discusses legal action taken against CPCs, their current sources of funding, and what concerned citizens can do to combat their harmful tactics.
"CPCs have a long history of intentionally misleading women to prevent them from accessing a full range of reproductive health care options including contraception and abortion," said Vicki Saporta, NAF President and CEO. "Many women have reported that their confidentiality has been violated and that mistreatment by CPCs has threatened their health. Yet each year they receive millions of dollars in federal and state aid."
CPCs have deliberately chosen names similar to reproductive health care facilities and located their offices in close proximity to abortion providers in an attempt to mislead women considering abortion. Although many CPCs portray themselves as clinics offering medical services and options counseling, they do not provide accurate information about contraception and abortion and generally do not make referrals for such care. Approximately 4000 CPCs operate in the United States and there are more than 150 CPCs in Canada.
"People need to know the truth about Crisis Pregnancy Centers," said Saporta. "Women seeking reproductive health care information and services should not be exposed to their deceptive tactics. It is unconscionable that in many cases taxpayer dollars help fund their misinformation and intimidation. We want to expose CPCs for what they are - organizations that exist to dissuade women from having abortions instead of organizations that provide legitimate health care services for women."
