Washington - The National Abortion Federation commends Senator Boxer and Representative Nadler for introducing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), a landmark piece of legislation that would protect women's lives and health for generations to come. FOCA would codify the protections guaranteed in Roe v. Wade and safeguard women's reproductive freedom, regardless of the actions of an anti-choice administration or state legislature.
In recent years numerous states have passed increasingly restrictive anti-choice legislation that threatens women's ability to access safe, necessary reproductive health care. More than 500 anti-choice bills were introduced in 2005, imperiling the right to choose for millions of American women.
This year restrictive legislation became even more dangerous when South Dakota passed a bill that banned almost all abortions in the state. Many states are following South Dakota's lead and introducing sweeping abortion bans of their own.
Politicians should not endanger the lives and health of women to advance their own political agendas. It is more important than ever that we protect women's reproductive freedom for future generations. We stand with and thank Senator Boxer and Representative Nadler for their leadership and determination to ensure that women have access to safe and legal reproductive health care.
