The National Abortion Federation is deeply concerned that Judge Samuel Alito was confirmed to be the 110th Justice of the United States Supreme Court. His confirmation puts women's rights, individual liberties, and reproductive freedom in jeopardy.
Despite his troubling judicial record, Senators voted 58 to 42 to confirm Alito. This was the closest vote on a Supreme Court nominee since Clarence Thomas. Alito was not a consensus candidate and did not receive the 60 votes that the majority of Americans think should be necessary for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
For over 30 years, Roe v. Wade has protected women's lives and health by allowing women to access safe, legal abortion care. Two-thirds of Americans continue to support a woman's right to choose and the precedent established in Roe. We certainly hope that despite Alito's confirmation, the Supreme Court will continue to protect women's lives and health by upholding and not further weakening Roe v. Wade.
