January 28, 2010 marks the 22nd anniversary of R v. Morgentaler, the Supreme Court decision that decriminalised abortion and made Canada one of only a few countries without a federal law restricting abortion. However, while abortion has been legal for 22 years, access remains variable across the country.
Access to abortion care is particularly challenging for women outside of urban centres, women attempting to use insurance outside of their home province, and women in New Brunswick where provincial policies require additional restrictions before a woman can obtain abortion care.
As we celebrate this important anniversary, we must remain vigilant in ensuring that women are able to access the abortion care they need, and we will continue our work to help women overcome barriers to access in Canada.

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in Canada and the United States. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year.
