Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation (NAF):
Today marks the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion care in the United States. While we celebrate this historic anniversary, we are also reminded of the challenges that lie ahead, especially during this critical time in our nation's health care debate.
Both the House and the Senate versions of the health care reform bill contain language that could restrict insurance coverage for abortion and place unnecessary burdens on women. We continue to urge Congress to pass a health care reform bill that does not further restrict women's access to abortion care.
Abortion care is basic health care for women and should not be singled out and treated differently from any other health service. As we mark this important anniversary, we must remain vigilant in ensuring that women are able to access the abortion care they need.

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year.
