1. NAF Annual Meeting - events for CNMs, NPs, and PAs

At the 2007 NAF Annual Meeting, there will be a Clinicians for Choice breakfast and a concurrent session titled "Getting our ducks in a row: Challenges to primary care provider practice and abortion access." This session will focus on the new challenges that are emerging for abortion providers in primary care settings such as politically motivated complaints to professional licensing boards, invasive state audits of abortion provider financial records, restrictions on malpractice insurance, and heightened scrutiny of clinician scope of practice by state regulatory agencies. In addition to a professionally diverse panel of primary care providers including nurse practitioners and a family practice physician, national experts in health professional practice and regulation will explore practice challenges regarding abortion care.

For security reasons, we do not provide information about our conferences on our website or public listservs. If you would like more information, please contact our Meeting and Conference Coordinator by emailing meetings@prochoice.org.

2. NAF Public Policy Update

House of Representatives Passes Stem Cell Research Bill; White House Threatens Veto

On January 11, 2007, the House of Representatives passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007, a measure that would expand federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, by a vote of 253-174. This legislation was passed by the House and the Senate with broad bipartisan support in 2006, but was vetoed by President Bush. President Bush has again vowed to veto this legislation. For more information, visit NAF's web site.

Prevention First Act introduced in Congress

On January 4, 2007, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced the Prevention First Act (S. 21) in the Senate. Prevention First is a package of legislative initiatives designed to expand access to preventive health care services and programs that reduce unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The bill calls for an increase in funding for the Title X family planning program, expands Medicaid family planning services, requires private health plans to cover prescription contraceptives to the same extent they cover other prescription drugs, provides funding for an emergency contraception (EC) education campaign, requires emergency rooms to provide EC access to survivors of sexual assault, provides funding for teen pregnancy prevention programs, and provides for comprehensive, medically accurate sex education programs. The bill has also been introduced in the House of Representatives. For more information, visit NAF's web site.

3. New NAF Resource

Between 2001 and 2004, NAF with funding from the Open Society Institute (OSI) conducted a series of trainings in manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) to improve the quality of abortion care women receive in selected countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Trainings were conducted in Moldova, Macedonia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Albania, and Russia.

The trainings successfully accomplished the goal of introducing MVA and presenting a model of evidence-based care with a woman-centered approach.
