Election Results Signal Victory for Reproductive Freedom
The November 7th election was a victory for reproductive freedom and for women throughout the country. Voters elected pro-choice candidates and rejected dangerous ballot initiatives that would have banned or restricted abortion access.
"This is a great day for women and our nation as a whole," National Abortion Federation (NAF) President and CEO Vicki Saporta said. "The election results reflect the reality that a majority of Americans support access to comprehensive reproductive health care."
Candidates supportive of reproductive freedom were elected to the House of Representatives, the Senate, governorships, and state legislatures.
Voters in South Dakota, California, and Oregon decisively defeated anti-choice ballot initiatives.
In South Dakota, voters by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent rejected the most restrictive abortion ban in the nation. This dangerous ban would have outlawed safe abortion procedures at all stages of pregnancy with only a limited exception for the life of the woman.
"The voters of South Dakota have made it clear that they will not tolerate an abortion ban that would endanger the lives and health of women," Saporta said.
Voters in California and Oregon rejected ballot measures that would have required parental notification at least 48 hours before a minor could obtain an abortion. Both states have defeated similar notification laws in the past. A parental notification provision was on the California ballot last year, while Oregon voters rejected such an initiative in 1990.
"California and Oregon voters again recognized that parental notification laws endanger the health and safety of teens," Saporta said.

NAF unveiled new sections of the www.prochoice.org website for French-speaking women seeking information about abortion and how to access quality care.
As the professional association of abortion providers in Canada and the U.S., NAF members care for more than half of the women who choose abortion each year.
"We want women to have accurate information about abortion care so that they can make the choices that are right for them," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of NAF. "Language should not be a barrier."
Visitors can reach the French-language pages of the NAF website by clicking "En français" on the top navigation bar or by going directly to www.prochoice.org/fr/. From the French-language landing page, visitors can access information on the following topics:
- deciding among the three options for an unintended pregnancy: abortion, motherhood, and adoption;
- pregnancy calculator;
- comparison of surgical and medical abortion;
- finding a provider;
- accessing the NAF Hotline at 800-772-9100;
- facts about abortion, linked to three selected fact sheets
- women who have abortions;
- the safety of surgical abortion; and
- post-abortion issues.
"We are excited about increasing our outreach to French speakers. In addition to our website, NAF's toll-free, multilingual Hotline is ready to assist women with unbiased, factual information; options counseling; and referrals to providers of quality abortion care," said Saporta.
In 2006, NAF launched a Canadian Public Policy and Outreach Program to improve abortion access and information for women in Canada.
La Fédération nationale de l'avortement (NAF) dévoilait aujourd'hui de nouvelles sections de son site Internet www.prochoice.org pour les femmes francophones qui veulent se renseigner en matière d'avortement et savoir comment avoir accès à des soins de qualité.
Les membres de la NAF, l'association professionnelle des pourvoyeurs d'avortement au Canada et aux États-Unis, s'occupent chaque année de plus de la moitié des femmes qui choisissent l'avortement.
"Nous voulons que les femmes puissent obtenir des renseignements justes en matière d'avortement, de façon à leur permettre de faire les meilleurs choix possibles", disait Vicki Saporta, présidente et directrice générale de la NAF. "La langue ne devrait pas être un obstacle."
Pour avoir accès aux pages en français, on peut cliquer sur "En français" sur la barre de navigation située au haut de l'écran ou aller directement à www.prochoice.org/fr/. À partir de la page d'accueil en français, on a accès à des renseignements sur les sujets suivants :
- prise de décision concernant les choix qui s'offrent à vous, c.-à-d. la grossesse non intentionnelle, l'avortement, la maternité ou l'adoption;
- calculatrice de grossesse;
- comparaison entre l'avortement chirurgical et médical;
- trouver un(e) praticien/praticienne pouvant effectuer l'avortement;
- accès à la ligne d'assistance (Hotline) de la NAF au 800-772-9100;
- fiches de renseignements sur l'avortement, offrant des données concernant :
- les femmes qui ont un avortement;
- la sûreté de l'avortement chirurgical; et
- les questions relatives aux effets de l'avortement.
"Nous nous réjouissons de pouvoir ainsi accroître l'accès offert à la clientèle francophone. Outre son site Internet, la NAF offre une ligne d'assistance (Hotline) multilingue sans frais où les femmes peuvent obtenir des renseignements impartiaux et factuels, un service de counseling destiné à les aider à faire leur choix et un service d'orientation qui les dirige vers un pourvoyeur d'avortement offrant des soins de haute qualité", disait Saporta.
En 2006, la NAF lançait un programme destiné à l'élaboration d'une politique axée sur une clientèle canadienne et à sa diffusion externe (Canadian Public Policy and Outreach Program), l'objectif étant d'accroître l'accès à l'information et à l'avortement pour les femmes canadiennes.
