Remembering an American hero: George Tiller

We continue to mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Tiller was a dedicated physician who provided quality abortion care to women, at great personal sacrifice and risk. He is truly a hero to his fellow abortion providers and his patients. Dr. Tiller’s office is filled with letters from women, thanking him for the excellent, compassionate care he provided. Many of these women say Dr. Tiller saved their lives.

Since his tragic death, we have received messages from some of his patients and from people around the world who are saddened and outraged. We feel it is important to share these words and tributes to our beloved colleague and friend. For the first time, we will enable comments on our blog so that all of you can share your condolences or offer memories of Dr. Tiller. We invite you to join us in honoring a true American hero, Dr. George Tiller.

Austin, Texas City Council Votes to Regulate Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Last week, the Austin, TX City Council voted unanimously to require Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) that don't offer or refer clients for abortion care or birth control services to post signs with that information at their facilities.

This ordinance comes two months after the Baltimore, MD City Council passed a similar law requiring CPCs without licensed medical professionals to post signs informing women that they were not receiving information from medical professionals. The majority of CPCs often use deceptive advertising practices to give the appearance that they are legitimate medical clinics that provide a variety of reproductive health care services, including family planning and abortion care.

In reality, most CPCs do not provide full options counseling and generally will not refer for abortion care or birth control. Women who mistakenly visit CPCs describe being harassed, intimidated, and given blatantly false information at their appointments.

If you have experience with a deceptive CPC, we would be interested in hearing your story.

Montgomery County (MD) Regulates Crisis Pregnancy Centers

This week, the Montgomery County Council in Maryland passed a bill that requires pregnancy centers without licensed medical professionals to post signs telling women that they are not receiving information from medical professionals.

This bill is expected to affect the operations of crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), the majority of which do not have medical professionals on staff, and often use deceptive advertising practices to give the appearance that they are legitimate medical clinics that provide a variety of reproductive health care services, including family planning and abortion care.

In reality, most CPCs do not provide full options counseling and generally will not refer for abortion care or birth control. Women who mistakenly visit CPCs describe being harassed, intimidated, and given blatantly false information at their appointments.

The bill passed on a vote of 7-2.

If you have experience with a deceptive CPC, we would be interested in hearing your story.

Wednesday's Words from Women

Over one-third of women of reproductive age have an abortion by the age of 45. However, women who have chosen abortion are often absent from the public debate. In order to break the silence surrounding abortion, we will be featuring real stories from real women each Wednesday on our blog. If you would like to share your story with us or have it published on our blog, go to http://www.prochoice.org/pregnant/hotline/share.html.

I'm a 21-year-old single mother of two, and without this decision I would more than likely have had to drop out of college to take care of my children. I feel that women have rights and should not be judged for their decisions.

I had a surgical abortion in April. When I discovered I was pregnant, I visited a Crisis Pregnancy Center (CPC). When I walked in, I was greeted warmly. They gave me a free ultrasound and seemed sweet and supportive. Then came the counseling session, during which I asked to be excused several times, and was told each time it was mandatory since they had given me an ultrasound for free. When I informed them of my decision to have an abortion, I was forced to watch a graphic video. I was suffering from morning sickness and I had to run out to vomit several times. They told me these were the consequences of sin. They warned me my fiance would never be able to look at me as anything other than the woman who killed his first child. I'll never forget the way I felt leaving the Crisis Pregnancy Center that day.

I later visited a reputable abortion provider. My state required my provider to warn me about the supposed physical and psychological effects of abortion. I felt no shame, guilt, or depression resulting from my abortion. However, the CPC I visited brought me untold shame, stress, and confusion. My state legislators should have saved their mandated warning for the CPC.

I’m not working right now, and because of the economy my boyfriend was laid off of work. I’m also a full time student in college, with hopefully two years left if I can find a way to pay for it. My boyfriend and I love each other very much and do wish to have a family some day, but with the world taking the course that it is, it is best that we focus on finishing school and supporting each other rather than struggling right now to raise a family.

In my hometown there is a women's crisis center. They say they give you clear, honest, and upfront information about all your options. I took my 19-year-old niece there to help her make the best choice for herself. I was horrified by the woman in charge. She told my niece that if you have an abortion they put razor blades inside you then suction the fetus out and place it on a tray to determine how far along you were. I had heard enough. I told my niece we needed to get out of there. The woman asked why and said she wanted to tell my niece about adoption. I told her that she had just lied to us once and I wasn’t going to sit there and listen to any more. I told her that I had an abortion and have since had children, and that the procedure was nothing like she was telling my niece. The worker then told me that my children were at higher risk for mental and emotional disabilities. Have you ever heard such insane comments?

My niece made her decision when she got the real facts on all her options from the NAF Hotline. I thank NAF for providing her with this information. There are so many young women with nowhere to turn for REAL non judgmental help, and then you have these sick twisted people scaring them. And many are government funded. It’s sick how they scare young women. I can’t believe it’s legal to be so ignorant.

Article Features Women’s Stories from Crisis Pregnancy Center

An article published last week in Pasadena Weekly features accounts from women deceived by a local Crisis Pregnancy Center (CPC).

“I thought I was at a medical clinic,” recalls Judy, a 43-year-old mother of one, who mistakenly went into Avenues [Pregnancy Clinic] because it’s adjacent to her general practitioner’s office. “I don’t like what I went through,” she says. “It was a horrible experience—just manipulative. Deceptive! That’s what I feel—deceived.”

After hearing stories from women like Judy, reporter Tina Dupuy decided to go undercover and visit the same CPC and write about her experience. “I spent nearly two hours of my time to get an admittedly unreliable pregnancy test, [and] erroneous medical information,” Dupuy said. She was also forced to listen to a religious speech from one of the CPC workers and given inaccurate information about the effectiveness of contraception.

Many CPCs use deceptive advertising practices to mislead women into thinking that they are legitimate medical clinics that provide a variety of reproductive health care services, including family planning and abortion care. In reality, most CPCs do not provide full options counseling and generally will not refer for abortion care or birth control. In June 2006, NAF released Crisis Pregnancy Centers: An Affront to Choice, a comprehensive report outlining the ways that CPCs harass and mislead women.

S.C. Bill Would Require Women Seeking Abortion Care to be Given List of Nearby CPCs

Seven South Carolina House Representatives have prefiled a bill that would require women seeking abortion care to be given a list of nearby CPCs and other facilities that provide free ultrasounds. This bill expands upon the law passed in 2008 that requires women seeking an abortion to be given the option of viewing an ultrasound image prior to receiving care.

“This is just another attempt by Republicans to chink away at women’s rights in this state,” said Rep. Todd Rutherford (D-Columbia). “We have a Senate that has no women and a House with very few women and we want to tell a woman what to do with her body.”

Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) exist to dissuade women from having abortions, and often use false information to mislead women. South Carolina is already home to some of the most stringent abortion restrictions in the country, including parental consent for minors, state-mandated biased counseling and waiting periods, and required ultrasounds.

National Abortion Federation Denounces the Appointment of Dr. Orr to Oversee Federal Family Planning Funds

NAF issued this press release today:

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) denounces the appointment of Dr. Susan Orr as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs (DASPA). DASPA oversees Title X, the nation's family planning program, which provides high-quality family planning and preventive health care services to over five million low-income individuals annually.

This appointment raises serious concerns, as Dr. Orr previously served as the Senior Director for Marriage and Family Care at the Family Research Council (FRC), an organization that has advocated for limited access to contraception. She currently serves on the board of directors for Teen Choice, a nonprofit organization, which advocates for abstinence in lieu of contraception.

During her time at FRC, Dr. Orr spoke out in support of President George W. Bush’s proposed elimination of the contraceptive coverage requirement from federal employees’ health insurance. In 2001 she said to The Washington Post, “We’re quite pleased because fertility is not a disease. It’s not a medical necessity that you have [contraception].”

This is not the first time that President Bush has made a controversial appointment to this critical public health post. Last year, Bush appointed anti-birth control advocate Dr. Eric Keroack, who had previously managed Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) in Massachusetts, to this position. CPCs are designed to discourage pregnant women from seeking abortion care, and in many instances they misinform and intimidate women to achieve their goal. Dr. Keroack resigned in March 2007 following public outrage.

"This is just another example of the Bush Administration promoting politics over a sound health policy. Dr. Orr should not be entrusted with the oversight of the federal family planning program and the health of millions of Americans," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of NAF. "For more than 35 years, the Title X program has been a hallmark of quality preventive care, enabling practitioners to provide family planning services to low-income individuals."

Stop the Deceptive Advertising Practices of Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Women seeking reproductive health care should be able to make informed decisions and access medically accurate information about their options. For that reason, Representative Carolyn Maloney has introduced the "Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Services Act," which authorizes the Federal Trade Commission to regulate the deceptive advertising practices of CPCs to ensure that they could not be confused with legitimate abortion providers or providers of abortion referrals.

CPCs should not be permitted to engage in deliberate attempts to divert women away from receiving abortion care by capitalizing on their deceptive tactics. Please contact your Representative and urge them to cosponsor this important legislation!

Texas Lawmakers Introduce Bills to Regulate Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Democratic lawmakers in Texas are introducing legislation that would regulate Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs). The bills would create licensing standards for the facilities and penalties for providing inaccurate medical information. Recently, CPCs have received national media attention for their deceptive tactics and public sources of funding. In 2005, Texas lawmakers designated $5 million of the state’s family planning budget for antiabortion centers that do not offer medical care or referrals for contraception or abortion. This session, Texas lawmakers have again earmarked $5 million in the budget for these centers in 2008 and 2009.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the News

Sunday’s Palm Beach Post featured a front-page article about Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs). The article discussed the misleading and inaccurate information CPCs tell women including that there is a link between abortion and increased risk for developing breast cancer. More than 100 of the world’s leading experts on pregnancy and breast cancer have concluded that having an abortion does not increase a woman’s subsequent risk of developing breast cancer.

The article also included the experience of a patient who mistakenly visited a CPC in Virginia and has decided to publicly share her story about being harassed and mislead.

If you have experience with a deceptive CPC, we would be interested in hearing your story.

‘L-Word’ Depicts Crisis Pregnancy Center

This week’s episode of the Showtime original series “The L-Word” depicts the misleading practices of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs). Like so many real women who have shared their stories with us, a character on the show thinks she is at her appointment for an abortion, but instead finds herself at a CPC where the staff at the center attempt to intimidate her and change her mind. After an experience at a CPC, many women feel betrayed and angry just like the character on the show.

Pro-Choice License Plates Proposed in Florida

After years of unsuccessful attempts to stop the sale of anti-choice specialty license plates, NOW’s Orlando chapter has designed a Florida license plate which supports abortion rights. The group spent the past year designing the plate and plans to seek legislative approval for the proposed design next year. Thirteen states, including Florida, allow drivers to pay extra for anti-choice vanity plates, but only Hawaii and Montana offer plates that support reproductive freedom.

The revenue from anti-choice license plates often funds Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) and other anti-choice organizations.

National Abortion Federation Denounces Appointment of Dr. Keroack to Oversee Federal Family Planning Funds

Saporta: “Dr. Keroack should not be entrusted with the oversight of the Title X program and the health of millions of Americans.”

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) today denounced the appointment of Dr. Eric Keroack as the new Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs (DASPA). DASPA oversees Title X, the nation’s family planning program, which provides high-quality family planning and preventive health care services to over five million low-income individuals annually.

This appointment raises serious concerns because Dr. Keroack is currently the Medical Director for A Woman’s Concern (AWC), six crisis pregnancy health centers located in the Greater Boston Area. Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) are designed to discourage pregnant women from seeking abortions, and in many instances, they misinform and intimidate women to achieve their goal. Dr. Keroack’s support of biased counseling is troubling given Title X’s long-standing commitment to medically accurate information. In addition, AWC health centers will not distribute, encourage the use of, or offer referrals for contraceptive drugs and devices.

“CPCs intentionally mislead women to prevent them from accessing a full range of reproductive health care options including contraception and abortion,” National Abortion Federation (NAF) President and CEO Vicki Saporta said. “Instead of providing legitimate health care services for women, CPCs exist to dissuade women from considering abortion.”

NAF has joined with a coalition of health care and women’s organizations in sending a letter to Michael Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, to express serious concerns over the appointment of Dr. Keroack.

“Dr. Keroack should not be entrusted with the oversight of the Title X program and the health of millions of Americans,” Saporta said. “For more than 35 years, the Title X program has been a hallmark of quality preventative care, enabling practitioners to provide family planning services to low-income individuals.”

In June 2006, NAF released a comprehensive report detailing the many ways Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) have deceived and intimidated women. The report, entitled Crisis Pregnancy Centers: An Affront to Choice , highlights numerous instances where CPCs have harassed and given false information to women, leaving them feeling betrayed and misled. The report also discusses legal action taken against CPCs.

Act Now to Protect Title X, America’s Family Planning Program

For more than 35 years, the Title X program has been a hallmark of quality preventative care, enabling practitioners to provide family planning services to over 5 million low-income individuals annually. However, this program and its mission are now at serious risk. The Bush Administration has just appointed an anti-choice ob-gyn, Dr. Eric Keroack, to the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs, a position which oversees the Title X program.

This appointment raises serious concerns, because Dr. Keroack is currently the Medical Director for A Woman’s Concern (AWC), five crisis pregnancy health centers located in the Greater Boston Area. Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) are designed to dissuade pregnant women from seeking abortions, and in many instances, they misinform and intimidate women to achieve their goal. Dr. Keroack’s support of biased counseling is in direct conflict with Title X’s long-standing requirement that women facing an unintended pregnancy be provided with medically accurate information. In addition, AWC health centers will not distribute, encourage the use of, or offer referrals for contraceptive drugs and devices.

Dr. Keroack should not be entrusted with the oversight of the Title X program and the health of millions of American women. Act now and urge Secretary of Health and Human Services, Michael Leavitt, to reconsider the appointment of Dr. Keroack as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs.

Bush Names Anti-choice Advocate to Oversee Family Planning

This week, the Bush Administration appointed Eric Keroack, M.D., as the new Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs (DASPA) within the Department of Health and Human Services. In this post Keroack will oversee the Office of Family Planning and the Title X program, which is the only Federal program designed to fund family planning and reproductive health services.

An anti-choice advocate, Keroack is the Medical Director of six Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Massachusetts, which oppose counseling and education on birth control, and attempt to dissuade women from obtaining abortions.

Supreme Court Declines Review of Anti-Choice License Plates

The Washington Post reports that the Supreme Court denied pro-choice groups’ request that states be blocked from offering specialty license plates that say “choose life.” The cases focused on Louisiana and Tennessee, where drivers can pay extra for anti-choice vanity plates, but are not offered alternative plates that support reproductive freedom. Federal judges in Louisiana and Texas found the license plates unconstitutional, but federal appeals’ courts overturned the decisions.

The revenue from “choose life” license plates is often used to fund Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) or other anti-choice organizations.

NAF Releases Report on Crisis Pregnancy Centers

NAF released a comprehensive report today detailing the many ways Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) have deceived and intimidated women. The report, entitled Crisis Pregnancy Centers: An Affront to Choice, highlights numerous instances where CPCs have harassed and given false information to women who have come through their doors, leaving them feeling betrayed and misled. The report also discusses legal action taken against CPCs, their current sources of funding, and what concerned citizens can do to combat their harmful tactics.

You can read the full report here.

On Tuesday, an Ohio State House committee heard testimony on a bill that would ban abortion in all circumstances, including when a woman’s life is threatened. At a rally protesting the bill, a woman told her story of having an unsafe, illegal abortion in the days before Roe v. Wade.

The Kansas City Star reports on a trend in state legislatures to consider “trigger laws,” which would ban abortion in their states if Roe v. Wade were overturned.

Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire is challenging a rule that would allow pharmacists to refuse to dispense prescriptions on religious grounds, including emergency contraception and birth control.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Parental Consent, and the FACE Act in the News

Salon.com has an article examining the deceptive practices of crisis pregnancy centers.

A new parental consent law took effect in Utah yesterday. The Salt Lake City Tribune reports on how doctors and judges are struggling to comply with the confusing legislation.

The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from anti-abortion extremists seeking to reduce the damages they owe to the abortion providers they terrorized. The protestors, who put abortion providers’ faces on “wanted” posters, were convicted of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinics Entrances (FACE) Act.

Parking--a new way to stop CPCs?

Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) have been deceiving women who seek reproductive health care for years. CPCs masquerade as legitimate health clinics to lure women in their doors. Once inside, they give women misinformation to dissuade them from having an abortion.

Despite their deceptive tactics, many Crisis Pregnancy Centers receive federal funding and are difficult, if not impossible, to shut down.

However, this CPC in Deer Park, New Jersey, may be the first CPC to be shut down over parking spaces.
