Vice President of Finance and Administration

The National Abortion Federation (NAF), the leading pro-choice organization representing abortion providers and their patients, has an immediate full-time opening for a Vice President of Finance and Administration, who will serve as NAF's Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

NAF is a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our members include the physicians, nurses, counselors, administrators and other health care professionals at 400 clinics, hospitals and physicians' offices in the United States and Canada. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and the women they serve. NAF's programs include: accredited continuing medical education; quality assurance and improvement; clinic security and law enforcement education; clinical, legal, and consumer publications; public education; public policy advocacy; group purchasing; and a national toll-free hotline.

National Abortion Federation Canada is a non-profit Canadian corporation that works to educate health care professionals and the public to improve women's access to quality abortion care.

Responsibilities: The Vice President of Finance and Administration reports to the President/CEO and oversees and directs the financial and administrative operations of NAF and our affiliated organization. This includes:

  • Implementing and monitoring financial, membership, accounting and related information systems and internal controls;
  • Advising the President/CEO with respect to financial conditions and trends of the organizations;
  • Preparing reports for the Board and foundations that are timely and accurate;
  • Overseeing development of NAF's annual budget and monitoring performance against budget;
  • Preparing for and facilitating the annual audit;
  • Ensuring timely and accurate tax filing;
  • Preparing monthly/quarterly financial statements for NAF and affiliated organization;
  • Overseeing membership application process and dues collection; and
  • Managing NAF's financial information systems, banking relationships, insurance renewals, technology infrastructure and administrative office functions.

This position is also responsible for NAF's overall Human Resources and the supervision of accounting and administrative staff.

Qualifications: Candidates should have:

  • A Master's Degree, CPA preferred;
  • At least ten years of financial and administrative management experience in a mid-size to large non-profit organization;
  • Accounting, administrative, membership and data management supervisory experience;
  • A working knowledge of GAAP regulations as they pertain to non-profit organizations;
  • Strong communications skills; and
  • A strong commitment to NAF's mission.

Experience with Peachtree, Donor Perfect, or similar database systems is required.

Salary is competitive with similar positions in the public interest sector. NAF offers an excellent benefits package.

Legislative Counsel

The National Abortion Federation (NAF), the leading pro-choice organization representing abortion providers and their patients, has an immediate full-time opening for the position of Legislative Counsel.

NAF is a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our members include the physicians, nurses, counselors, administrators and other health care professionals at 400 clinics, hospitals and physicians' offices in the United States and Canada.   • Developing strategies for introducing new legislation and responding to proposed legislation affecting the provision of reproductive health care at the federal level;
  • Monitoring executive appointments and judicial nominations, as well as promoting NAF's policy priorities with the Administration;
  • Representing the voices of patients and abortion providers and communicating organizational priorities in meetings with federal legislators and administrators;
  • Collaborating with NAF staff to identify trends affecting NAF members and develop legislative initiatives and strategic responses to address member needs;
  • Educating and engaging NAF members around legislative and legal issues relating to reproductive health care;
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with other pro-choice organizations and coalitions;
  • Assisting the General Counsel in legal research relating to NAF operations, programs and services.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to reproductive choice;
  • Law degree;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Outstanding analytical ability;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Legal or legislative experience of at least three years or equivalent;
  • Working knowledge of word processing, database, and web-based applications; and
  • Knowledge of women's health care issues desirable.

Case Manager for NAF Hotline

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year. Responsibilities:

  • Work with women in difficult financial situations, including fundraising and financial counseling.
  • Sustain positive and supportive liaisons with NAF member clinics.
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with partner organizations, including (among others) local and national abortion funds and the National Network of Abortion Funds.
  • Collaborate with Hotline Director on narrative and quantitative reports for funders, board, and other departments as needed.
  • Train Hotline Operators to assist in case management.
  • Provide back-up for Hotline Operators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Individual must:

  • be strongly pro-choice,
  • have experience with hotline and/or counseling work,
  • have a commitment to empowering women,
  • be sensitive to diverse populations,
  • be able to multitask and perform effectively in a noisy, busy environment,
  • have computer and database experience, and
  • have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • be fluent in Spanish.

Training and Education Coordinator/Conference Planner

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. NAF is a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible to promote health and justice for women. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and the women they serve. Our members include the physicians, certified nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, counselors, administrators, and other health care professionals at 400 clinics, hospitals and physicians' offices in the United States and Canada.

The primary responsibilities of the Training and Education Coordinator are to:

  • coordinate continuing medical education meetings for 200-800 attendees including doctors, clinicians, counselors and administrators;
  • conduct site visits at meeting venues;
  • negotiate meeting site and vendor contracts;
  • facilitate curriculum building process for NAF's two annual meetings under the direction of the Training and Education Director;
  • arrange for design and production of meeting materials including 300 page syllabus, preliminary/final programs, and exhibitor prospectus;
  • manage meeting faculty communications and logistics;
  • track continuing medical education credits for medical professionals to ensure NAF continues to exceed its accreditation requirements; and
  • manage meeting budget.

The Coordinator will report to the Training and Education Director, and work in concert with other NAF staff.

Duties:

  • contract with hotel/meeting sites covering all aspects of a meeting--from food and beverage to room allocation and AV requirements;
  • manage logistical details of large-scale meeting including floor plans, room set-up, banquet selections, and shipping materials;
  • maintain NAF conference database;
  • manage faculty details, including booking rooms and obtaining presentations that meet NAF requirements;
  • facilitate the design and printing of meeting materials;
  • assemble meeting packets;
  • adhere to strict meeting deadlines for mailings, design/printing of meeting materials;
  • send RFPs to perspective vendors, hotels, and meeting sites;
  • communicate details of NAF meetings to NAF membership;
  • contract with shipping company for NAF materials to be sent to conference locations; if meeting is outside U.S. then contract with a Customs Broker to ensure delivery across the border; and
  • communicate with vendors (exhibitors) to exhibit at NAF conferences.

Qualifications:

  • strong commitment to a woman's right to choose abortion;
  • bachelor's degree;
  • three years of related professional work experience;
  • excellent organizational, written and verbal communications skills;
  • experience in database management;
  • willingness to travel approximately four times per year; and
  • ability to multi-task and work under strict deadlines.

Hotline Operator

Hotline Operators answer the national toll-free Hotline and are trained to provide callers with unbiased, factual information about pregnancy and abortion. The Hotline Operators also offer: confidential and non-judgmental support, referrals to providers in the caller's area, referrals to funding sources, aid in understanding the complex maze of state abortion restrictions, and case management for women in difficult situations.

Qualifications:

Hotline Operators must be pro-choice, have some interest or background in reproductive health care issues, have a calm and friendly telephone manner, be able to deal with the public on the sensitive issue of abortion and have some office skills. Hotline Operators may also have previous knowledge of abortion issues, and previous hotline experience. Second language skills are very helpful, but not required. The Hotline Supervisor will train and supervise Hotline Operators.

Hours and Remuneration:

$8/hour to start. Positions are available year-round. Six-month minimum commitment required. Willing to work out academic credit arrangements. Position is part-time. The Hotline is open Monday to Friday 8 A.M. - 9 P.M. and Saturday 9 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Clinic Defense and Research Intern

Note: this internship is not available for the summer of 2009

NAF's Clinic Defense and Research Department works with member clinics to improve security and assist clinic staff in dealing with threats and violence. The department also works with law enforcement officials to improve relationships between law enforcement and clinics, deter violence against abortion providers and pursue and prosecute those responsible for committing acts of violence. In addition, the department produces a monthly newsletter on incidents of violence against clinics and maintains a database of incidents of violence and disruption.

Duties Include:

  • Gathering and organizing information on anti-abortion extremists
  • Entering and compiling statistics on violence and disruption against abortion providers
  • Maintaining database of law enforcement contacts
  • Assisting in a wide range of projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated pro-choice commitment
  • Two or more years of undergraduate work with 3.0 GPA or above

Hours and Renumeration:

  • 40 hours per week
  • Modest stipend

Communications Intern

NAF's Communications Intern will work in the Communications Department, which:

  • Works closely with members of the press, responds to press inquiries, and pitches story ideas
  • Develops public education and research materials
  • Tracks press coverage of abortion-related issues
  • Manages NAF's website, blog, and online projects
  • Works closely with NAF patients who have chosen abortion and are willing to share their stories with the media, legislators, and the public
  • Conducts consumer outreach projects

Duties Include:

  • Tracks press coverage of abortion related issues
  • Creates content for NAF's website
  • Assists with all aspects of media relations, including development of press materials, press outreach, and press conferences
  • Develops public education and research materials
  • Supports marketing and outreach projects

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose abortion
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Background in English, political science, or communications

Hours and Remuneration:

  • 40 hours per week preferred in the summer

Public Policy Intern

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in North America. NAF's Public Policy Department works to provide medical expertise to policy makers and to ensure that the voices of abortion providers and patients are heard in policy forums across the country. NAF's policy interns will work on legal issues, state legislative policy, and/or federal legislative policy.

Duties Include:

  • Performing legal research
  • Drafting memoranda, fact sheets, issue papers, and alerts
  • Assisting in other projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • One or more years of law school
  • Coursework in constitutional law

Hours:
